Anderson | Some Rain Must Fall

Anderson makes a long-awaited follow-up to his 2015 debut album Patterns with a collection of ten songs entitled Some Rain Must Fall which will be released on November 1st, (Order on vinyl).

Some Rain Must Fall follows a long period of self-reflection and even a decision to entirely stop music-making. “I’m an electrician by trade,” says Daniel Anderson. That’s what I’m professionally qualified to do and what I worked as before I dedicated my life to music. Being a musician has taken up the majority of my adult life but I’d always had a feeling of imposter syndrome with it. In the back of my head I’d be thinking ‘I’m an electrician – I’m not supposed to be making art’.”

“Leaving my trade behind, my ambition was always to make writing music a viable career path. When that didn’t materialise the only other career I could potentially fall back on was being an electrician. But for different reasons it just didn’t work. I changed so completely that going back into that world was impossible. I felt like an imposter all over again. But the dilemma triggered something in me and new songs and ideas started coming. I stopped obsessing on the career that music hadn’t given me and instead focused on how it had enriched my life. It wasn’t easy but everything I went through was captured in the songs and it’s all there on the record: work, worth, fear, pain, ageing, art, love, life and an understanding that into every life some rain must fall.”

Both tracks are accompanied by separate new videos, created by Colm Russell, who collaborated with designer Niall McCormack for the record’s artwork, as they had on Patterns.  “The album’s long gestation period allowed us time to try out lots of ideas individually, and try to find common ground collaboratively,” Colm says. “But when we came across Marc O’Sullivan’s photographs of interior of the derelict Iveagh Markets we both agreed that it resonated the album’s title and themes so well. That fact that Daniel’s grandmother traded there for decades and that he had a deep personal connection to the space made it even more fitting and a continuation from the cover of the first album. So much visual culture is ephemeral these days. We wanted to try and create something that looked like it had been around forever, and still lives on regardless of the passing of time. The image suggests so many interpretations that fit with the context of the record, and separately, just works really works as an album cover.”

To some, Anderson may be best remembered for taking his debut album door to door in a much-loved promotional video which went viral ahead of the release of Patterns. The novel approach to music PR occurred from frustration with the music industry’s traditional self-promotion circuit. “I had tried promoting my music the traditional way and no-one was that interested. The door to door idea just arose from conversations about how being a musician is like being a travelling salesperson. The constant hustle of selling your gig, your record, yourself takes a toll. We just took that idea to an extreme and had fun with it. My inbox exploded with interest. That sort of overnight transformation was very illuminating as regards music publicity and promotion. It’s not something I’d ever consider attempting to repeat… and anyway I think this time around the music is robust enough to sell itself.”
